In the actual questions, these may be assumed to be referring to the person with the problem they wish addressed, but in the rest of this document, including the answers to said questions they are referring to the FAQ maintainer.

What this FAQ is:

This FAQ is an attempt to answer the most common questions asked about the Ultima series of computer games created by Richard Garriott and Origin Systems. It covers both gameplay and technical problems that commonly occur, and human nature being what it is, also covers cheats or exploits when they exist in the game.

Note: These questions are based on the PC versions of Ultima unless otherwise noted. This means the technical questions in particular will be invalid for other systems.

What this FAQ isn't:

This FAQ is not intended to cover Ultima Online or any derivatives thereof. It also is not intended in any way to substitute for the rgcu.* FAQ maintained by Samurai Dragon, but rather to supplement the information contained therein with help for more of the common gameplay problems, both in the game and technical in nature. For information relating to the Ultima Dragons Internet Chapter or to actually participating in the forums they frequent, the rgcu.* FAQ should be consulted. The FAQ's temporary location is at:

  This section covers general information about the series and questions which can be asked about more than one game. 1.1 Abbreviations Used: U1 to U8: Ultima 1 to Ultima 8 respectively UA or U9: Ultima IX: Ascension UW1 & UW2: Ultima Underworld 1 & Ultima Underworld 2 FoV: Forge of Virtue (Ultima 7 Addon) SI: Serpent Isle (Ultima 7 Part 2) SS: Silver Seed (Serpent Isle Addon) SE & MD: Savage Empire and Martian Dreams respectively. 1.2 General Questions: These technical questions can be asked about more than one Ultima game. The answers are the same for most of them. 1.2.1 Q: How do I slow down the games? A: For SI and U8 you shouldn't need to. Both games have a built in frame limiter to keep things from running away on you. The Underworlds also seem fine on faster machines. For U1 to U7 however, you need a slowdown program. The most commonly used is MoSlo. Is there any online documentation for me to look at or download? A: After the release of the Encore Collection (a budget release of U1 to U6) which was completely lacking in any documentation, Micro Dragon and Trigon Dragon both started projects to recreate the documentation, in MS Word and Adobe PDF formats respectively. A: There are indeed. A: No. Origin put the questions in for a reason, and I have no way to verify your truthfulness. Contact them to ask for the answers. 1.2.7 Q: Where do I find gameplay editors and cheat programs? A: You can start by looking at Lord Empire Dragon's Backpacker's Guide to Britannia. A: This document will not go into illegal methods. Nor will correspondence asking for the games to be sent be replied to. Legal alternatives exist to software piracy. That being said, the majority of the Ultima games are fairly easy to obtain. Ultima IV can be legally downloaded from the site of any Ultima Dragon who chooses to make it available, and can ONLY be legally downloaded from a Dragon's site unless Electronic Arts specifies otherwise in the future. You can obtain the game and check the email correspondence authorising this either from Fortran Dragon's Hidalgo Trading Company site, or from Contrapuntal Dragon's site, to list just two. <http://home.kc.rr.com/hidalgo/> <http://www.zip.com.au/~mfleming/ultima/u4download.html> There are compilations containing most of the games available if you look. The Ultima Collection (U1 to U8) was recalled by Origin, but can still be found if you want to look, especially outside the United States. It's been recently rereleased as an EA Gold version, so it should be easier to find in the US now. Unfortunately it is no longer available for sale directly from Electronic Arts. Older compilations and budget releases (The Encore Collection with U1 to U6, the Complete Ultima VII, Ultima VIII, and the Underworlds, the latter three in various versions) can be found in bargain bins if you want to look carefully. The Underworlds were available as part of the Ultimate RPG Archives from Interplay, and you may be able to find copies in software shops, although Interplay no longer has it for sale directly. Once the bargain bins are exhausted, there is the Internet. The Ebay auction site <http://www.ebay.com> is a good place to get Ultima related items. In particular there is a compilation CD with SE, U7, and UW1 which is usually available for under US$10. The Ebay system allows you check on feedback about the sellers, so it's a good place to try to get items. The other games also are often for sale there, in various states of completeness. All in all, the only Ultima game it is hard to obtain in some form without paying a large sum of money is Martian Dreams, as it is the only one not released in some form of CD compilation. 1.2.10 Q: Ultima I and Underworld I were published on a magazine coverdisk. Does that mean I can download them if I missed the magazine? A: No. Just because permission was given by the copyright holders for that particular distribution, it does not mean that they have relinquished their rights to the games, or to say whether they may or may not be downloaded. Until permission is forthcoming from Electronic Arts and any other legal entity with the right to release them for download, downloading U1 or UW1 (and any other game of the series except U4, see 1.2.9 for details) is illegal. 1.2.11 Q: What other good places are there to find Ultima related information? A: There are many sites with much information about the Ultima series.   5.1 U4 Gameplay Questions: 5.1.1 Q: How do I get through locked doors? A: You need to purchase keys. These can be obtained from the Guild shops in Vesper and Buccaneer's Den. 5.1.2 Q: How do I locate and obtain a ship? A: Once again it is required that you wait for one to appear and attack. There are a number of ships around the Isle of the Abyss, but unfortunately you need a ship to reach them, which doesn't make things easier. 5.1.3 Q: What do I have to do to locate the Rune of Spirituality? No person seems to know much about it. A: You may have talked to the people, but not to all the entities of Skara Brae. Discuss the matter with the Ankh. Or if you are really desperate, search the treasure chamber in Castle Britannia for one of the greatest treasures of the realm. 5.1.4 Q: How do I use the balloon? It says "Drift Only" when I try to move, but I don't go anywhere when I wait. A: The problem is that you have boarded the balloon, but you haven't left the ground. In order to drift with the wind you need to Klimb off the ground, and to halt motion you need to Descend back down to it. The use of Wind Change spells is essential for steering. 5.1.5 Q: Where do I find a Shepherd? Magincia is a lifeless ruin. A: Head south once you enter the ruin, without crossing the bridge into Magincia. Katrina the Shepherd is at the southwest corner of the map. 5.1.6 Q: How do I get past the water in the secret tunnel around Jhelom? A: It isn't water, but is an Energy Field, which the Dispel spell will negate. 5.1.7 Q: How do I get past the room with the Sea Serpents in Dungeon Despise? I think the Yellow Stone is behind it. A: There is a secret door/illusionary wall to the right of the pool. Step into it. This makes a second secret door/illusionary wall appear in the section of wall to the southwest of the pool. Step into this one and a passage through is revealed. A screenshot shows the spots to stand. 5.1.8 Q: I have a similar problem in Dungeon Wrong - again there is no way though the room. A: This time there is a floor trigger hidden under an energy field. Dispel the fields and step on the trigger to open the passage. 5.1.9 Q: Where do I find the powerful reagents of Mandrake Root and Nightshade? A: Both reagents can only be found at the moonphase (0,0), ie no moons are visible. You also need to move off the spot where they are found then return there if you wish to collect more. The Nightshade is found in the forest at J'F", C'O" and in a patch of forest just north of the Shrine of Sacrifice at C'M", M'N", while the Mandrake Root is found in a single patch of swamp at D'G", L'G", and on an island in the Fens of the Dead at K'F", G'E". They also must be alive before you can remove them. 6.1.2 Q: Do I still need to hunt pirates in order to get a ship? A: No. Several townes now have shipwrights, who can sell Frigates or Skiffs for oceanic transport. If money is a problem however, you can still wait for one to appear then attack it as in previous games. 6.1.3 Q: How do I go up in levels? A: When you camp for an entire night, sometimes an apparition rises from the camp fire. This image heals the party and raises the party members to appropriate new levels. The final commentary gives you some idea how virtuous your gameplay has been to date. 6.1.4 Q: How do I play a Harpsichord? A: You stand (or sit) in front of the harpsichord and use the numbers on the main keyboard to play the notes. Faster computers may not be able to play the notes due to the excessive speed of modern computers as compared to the older models the game was designed for, but the correct keys on the correct harpsichord will still work regardless of whether you can hear the tune or not. 6.1.5 Q: How do I get rid of the purple barriers around a Shadowlord in combat? A: You can't. While a tool exists which can remove the ethereal wards, the Shadowlords will steal it before the combat begins if you actually obtain it before defeating them. The best way to handle the Shadowlord in combat is Xen Corp or a glass sword. 6.1.6 Q: Then how do I get rid of the barriers when I do encounter them in the absence of a Shadowlord? A: The Scepter of Lord British will destroy them. 6.1.7 Q: How do I get through the walls in the bottom room in Dungeon Deceit? A: From the north side you need to get the northern torch on the east wall and push east when standing where it was. This opens a gap in the wall. The other triggers are in the east and west walls of the chambers in the barrier. The final triggers are north and south to open the north and south walls respectively. From the south side, press north in the alcove in the west wall to open the first chamber in the barrier. Walk over to the west wall, and then move south along it, Klimbing over the rocks until a section of wall blocks your way. Push south. Move one pace east, then one pace south and push south again. Once again move east then south and push south in order to finally reveal the exit. There is a screenshot showing which walls to push here. 6.1.9 Q: How do I determine my current location? A: You need to use the Sextant or cast the Locate spell. The Sextant can be obtained from David at Greyhaven Lighthouse south of Trinsic. 6.1.10 Q: So what does an Amulet of Turning do anyway? A: The Amulet of Turning, for sale in Bordermarch, gives some protection from energy attacks. 6.1.11 Q: Why doesn't the Clone spell mix correctly? A: There is a bug in the PC version (other releases are unavailable for checking) which leaves out one of the reagents listed in the manual. To mix the 'In Quas Xen' spell, you need Sulphurous Ash, Ginseng, Blood Moss, Spider Silk, and Mandrake Root. Nightshade is not required. 6.2 U5 Technical Problems: 6.2.1 Q: Why can I only use the number keys '5' and '0'? A: You have the Numlock key enabled. Turn it of and you should be able to use the other numbers. It is possible (although rare) that you will have to reload the game without the Numlock key enabled to use them. NB - Some laptops have an 'Arrowlock' key which can cause the same problem as Numlock.   7.1 U6 Gameplay Questions: 7.1.1 Q: How do I cure poison? A: The spell 'Dispel Magic' is a generic fixit spell. It cures poison and wakes up party members. It can also be used to wake up people you need to talk to. 7.1.2 Q: How do I find out who killed Quenton? A: His killer was Michael, the fighter living on the road between Skara Brae and Britain, and eventually he will be executed for his crimes in Yew. Unfortunately you can't actually prove anything, but must wait for justice to take its course. You learn this from Mordra in Ultima VII. 7.1.3 Q: Can I cure Matt, the mute publican in Britain? A: No. 7.1.4 Q: What is the story of Dupre and the Tournament about? I remember scripting that. Well here's the whole story, right "from the cat's mouth" so to speak. The story wasn't left out because there wasn't a good one to tell... But because it was a little too raunchy for the standards the game was being written for at the time. As it was, I put a bawdy ballad in the game that Mandrake had sung for me at the High Fantasy Society here in Austin, and Warren Spector made me remove one verse because it has the word piss in it. So this story never would have made it in anyway... It's based on one of Iolo's real life stories. Iolo is a terribly charming and entertaining fellow, and he welcomes people into his workshop while he's making crossbows, to keep him company and chat and listen to his stories. When I found out I was going to be head writer on Ultima VI, I went over with 'Manda (aka Penumbra, aka Talzhemir) who was also on my writing team (as well as doing art for the game) with a notepad and pencil to soak up some first rate Iolo anecdotes to use as inspiration for the game. This particular story wasn't really a Iolo and Dupre incident in real life, it was Iolo and Jeremy at a weekend SCA event/tournament. I changed it to Dupre in the game using my artistic license (which I make sure to renew annually.) Anyway the story went something like this... Saturday night, Jeremy's in the big tent with all the food and, more importantly, the wine. Drinking and carousing and womanizing - being a very good looking fellow and quite the ladies man. Iolo, having seen Jeremy behave similarly at many a previous event, reminds him that the tournament starts early on Sunday, and he has to be up even EARLIER to be ready for it, and not to stay out ridiculously late getting drunk so he won't be ready the next morning, as has apparently happened in the past... Jeremy repeatedly assures him everything's fine, he'll be up the next morning at 6 AM no problem. Comes the next morning. Iolo goes over to Jeremy's tent to rouse him up out of whatever state he might be in after the previous night's debauchery. He says "Jeremy, are you awake?" Silence. Iolo embelished the story here in ways I don't remember well enough to do justice to, but he went through several queries and remarks, and each time he portrays Jeremy's "response" with a more dramatic adjective in front of the word "silence". Leading up to something like "Total silence". So Iolo finally says, "Jeremy, if you're not out of there in 30 seconds, I'm going to pee on the side of your tent." And the response was... Stunned silence. So then there's the sound of fluid spattering against the side of the tent. And in a split second, Jeremy's rolled himself to the opening of the tent, unzipped it, stuck his head out the opening - to see Iolo standing there with a wineskin, squirting water out of it onto the side of his tent! And that's the story of how Iolo woke Don Jeremy up in time to fight in the tournament. </Quote Dr Cat> 7.2 U6 Technical Problems: 7.2.1 Q: Why is the Adlib/Soundblaster music messed up? A: The program has a time delay command in the music, which is not long enough for faster computers. There is a patch to fix it. A: Go down to the river, and throw a grenade to blast the large boulder over the waterfall. This allows you to enter the cave behind it, which leads up to the ledge. 8.2 SE and Cheating: 8.2.1 Q: How do I turn on the cheat options? A: There is no way to turn on the cheat mode without an external program.
